Alarm System Power Supply

Every alarm system requires an electrical power supply to run. This typically consists of the following;

  • A small electrical transformer that converts the 120V AC line voltage to low voltage (16V AC is typical)
  • Components on the alarm control panel convert the 16VAC from the transformer to 12VDC. This is the same type of power supplied by your car battery.
  • A self-charging backup battery that will allow your system to continue to operate in the event of a power failure. If the AC power supply to your system fails the backup battery will automatically take over and supply power for about 8 to 12 hours. When the AC power returns the battery will automatically recharge.

The power supply is an essential part of the system because every other component in the system is relying on a stable, uninterrupted source of power to function. A poor quality power supply can result in problems such as false alarms or failure of the backup battery.
