Smoke
& heat detectors
Smoke
detectors are life safety devices that can be connected to
an alarm system and monitored by the monitoring station. There
are no additional monitoring charges for these devices but
you would need to have a smoke detector installed that is
compatible with the alarm system. There are two types of smoke
detectors commonly used, ionization and photoelectric. The
smoke detectors Quality Alarms installs are photoelectric.
They are of a higher quality and more expensive than hard-wired
smoke detectors found in most homes (usually ionization) and
generally create fewer false alarms. The electrical code requires
one, 120-volt smoke detector per floor. Smoke detectors that
connect to your alarm system operate on 12 volts and should
only be installed in addition to the 120-volt models.
There
are two types of heat detectors; fixed, which has a predetermined
temperature in which it will transmit an alarm signal (normally
135 degrees Celsius), and rate of rise, which measures rapid
increases in temperature. Heat sensors do not provide an early
warning of fire because they do not detect smoke. Heat detectors
are normally only used in dusty or smoky areas where a smoke
detector would be prone to false alarms.
